Biography

Yuji Nomi was born in Tokyo Japan in 1958. Best known for his film scores and orchestral compositions.

With his strong interests in arts and music, Nomi began studying music privately since his youth. He started his career by making for his friend's modern art performances at galleries and other venues. Those multitrack recordings which he made with a synthesizer were noticed and endorsed by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Under Sakamoto's supervision, Nomi released his first LP album Oshare TV (Oshare Terebi) for MIDI Record in 1986.

Subsequently, he joined several Sakamoto's projects, such as a 1986 film The Adventures of Milo and Otis (Koneko Monogatari), Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise (1987), and The Last Emperor (1987).

Nomi has also been working with Studio Ghibli since he composed the soundtrack for a 1995 animation film Whisper of the Heart. His works at Studio Ghibli include Hayao Miyazaki's short films for Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, Kujiratori(2001) and Koro's Big Day Out (Koro no Daisanpo)(2002).

1960s-80s Played rock and jazz in bands with his childhood friends throughout his boyhood as a student at junior and senior high schools. Nonetheless, Nomi has never received a specific musical education at certain institutions. After quitting the university, he begins art performances with his close friend.
1985 Met Ryuichi Sakamoto.
1986 Released a LP album Oshare TV under Sakamoto's supervision.
Composed and arranged the soundtrack for The Adventures of Milo and Otis with Sakamoto et al.
1987 Composed and arranged the soundtrack for Gainax's film, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto, with several other musicians.
For Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor, Nomi arranged and orchestrated scores of the soundtrack as Sakamoto was in charge of the project. Sakamoto won the Best Original Score award at the 1987 Academy Awards.
1994 Appointed a Musical Director for Dick Lee's musical play, Fantasia.
1995 Produced the soundtrack for a Studio Ghibli film, Whisper of the Heart (directed by Yoshifumi Kondou; produced by Hayao Miyazaki)
1996 Soundtrack for Fuji TV's television drama series Doc.
1997 - 99 Appointed to produce the music for Valerio Festi's Kobe Luminarie, an annual light festival.
2001 Composed soundtracks for Hayao Miyazaki's short films, Kujiratori and Koro's Big Day Out for Ghibli Museum of Tokyo. Those soundtracks were his early recordings with Czech Philharmonic.
2001 Produced the soundtrack for NHK Special Uchu Michi éno Daikiko.
2002 Produced the soundtracks for two NHK TV drama series, Kaiji Kawaguchi's Seizon LifE and Han'nari Kikutaro.
2002 Produced the soundtrack for a Studio Ghibli film, The Cat Returns (directed by Hiroyuki Morita). Worked with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
2003 Recorded the soundtrack for Nankyoku Daikiko, a NHK's special TV programme to celebrate the 50th anniversary of television, with NHK Symphony Orchestra.
2004 Produced the soundtrack for NHK's Hi No Tori
2005 Composed the theme song for Konami/Hudson Soft's videogame for PlayStation Portable, Rengoku.
2007 Was in charge of the music department for the TV series by GONZO, Bokurano (Ours).
2008-2009 Arranged music pieces to be played for the NHK programme, Min'na No Machi de Konsaato.
2011 Composed the soundtrack for TV series by Kyoto Animation, Nichijou. The soundtrack was recorded with the orchestra in Budapest.
2012 Composed the soundtrack for TV series by ZEXCS, Say "I Love You". (Suki-tte ii na yo).
Nomi's works can be also found in various fields, such as computer games, advertisements, artists' albums, etc.
